Student Support Services at AFPCS

Updated: Aug 19, 2020

Throughout the year, there will be students who receive individual and group counseling support via Microsoft Teams, Email or Classroom Dojo. These students receive counseling support on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule from the school counselor or school social worker.

These students will fall into the following categories:

  • Counseling as a related service in their Individual Education Plan (IEP)

  • Counseling as an accommodation in their 504 Plan

  • Tier 2 or 3 Social Emotional MTSS

  • Child Study Referral

  • Parent/Counselor recommendation

Student Assistance Program

The Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a systematic team process used to mobilize school resources to remove barriers to learning. SAP is designed to assist in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student's success. The primary goal of the Student Assistance Program is to help students overcome these barriers so that they may achieve, advance, and remain in school. Alliance for Progress Charter School has a partnership with Einstein Behavioral Health.

Parent/Guardian referral:

  • A parent can contact the AFPCS to request mental/behavioral health support

  • Once the request is made the SAP lead will contact the parent/guardian to consent to the referral and must sign consent forms

  • The consent forms are sent to Einstein (our SAP organization)

  • After the referral is made Einstein will contact the student’s parent/guardian to schedule a meeting which will be held via Zoom and determine the appropriate services.

  • AFPCS does not assume any responsibility once the referral has been made.

Social Emotional Learning:

All homeroom teachers are required to facilitate Social Emotional Learnings lessons via Second Step or Classroom Dojo weekly. The lessons are provided in a workbook for grades K-5 and on-line for grades 6-8. The lessons should be done during homeroom period. During the first 2 weeks of remote learning teachers for grades K-5 will be given specific social emotional lessons or their individual log-in during staff orientation week. These kits and log-in information must be kept in a secure place and returned at the end of the year.

The individual lessons should be taught in sequence/order based on the SEL unit calendar for your prospective grade. The climate team and counselors will also facilitate lessons with small groups and individual students based off their level of support (MTSS, Counseling). The SEL curriculum teaches children techniques that help them gain confidence, set and achieve positive goals, collaborate well, and navigate the world more effectively adding a highly valuable dimension to education in the classroom. Promoting social and emotional development in the classroom will allow the students to practice and apply these skills and reinforce them throughout the day.
